How India’s power market runs, block by block.
A plain guide to the markets our plans work in: when bids open and close, how prices are set, and who does what. Every time on this page is in IST.
From the published timetable. Not market data.
One day, four clocks.
Tomorrow is bought and sold in a one-hour window this morning. Today is corrected every half hour. Delivery is measured in 96 blocks of 15 minutes. Point at any part of the day to see what happens then.
Illustrative layout of the current timetable (IEGC 2023 and CERC orders). Times change when the regulator amends them.
Where power is bought and sold.
Day-ahead market (DAM)
Buyers and sellers bid between 10:00 and 11:00 for tomorrow. The exchange runs a closed auction and sets a clearing price for each of tomorrow’s 96 blocks.
Green day-ahead (G-DAM)
The same auction for power from renewable sources, in the same window. It clears first, and unsold green bids carry forward to the day-ahead market.
High-price day-ahead (HP-DAM)
For costlier sources, batteries among them. It clears after the day-ahead market, in the same window, with its own higher price limit.
Real-time market (RTM)
48 auctions a day, one every half hour. Each covers the next two blocks and closes an hour before delivery. It is how positions are corrected during the day.
Deviation settlement
Exchange schedules cannot be revised except for a forced outage. If a site injects or draws more or less than its schedule, the difference is settled block by block.
Your tariff and contract
Industries, fleets and data centres buy from the DISCOM, through open access, on the exchange or as green power. Each route has its own charges and rules.
Five parties, one clear chain.
Ezinore plans and reports. The owner decides. A licensed trading member places the bids. Ezinore is not a licensed power trader.

Schedules delivery. Deviations from schedule are settled block by block.
A grid adding capacity fast.
More capacity means more batteries, more renewable plants and more sites to run well, every block of every day.
Installed capacity: CEA, Aug 2026. Plan: CEA optimal generation mix 2029-30. The difference is about 222 GW.
The words we use.
- Block
- A 15-minute slot. A day has 96, and each has its own price and schedule.
- State of charge
- How full a battery is, as a share of what it can usefully hold.
- Cycle budget
- How many full charges and discharges a battery may do, so it stays inside its warranty.
- Digital twin
- A live copy of a site built from its own data, showing state, health and limits, with the age of every reading.
- Licensed trading member
- A firm licensed to trade power on the exchange. It places bids for its clients.
- Open access
- Buying power through the grid from a source other than your local DISCOM, for consumers who qualify.
- Deviation
- The gap between what a site was scheduled to inject or draw and what it actually did, in each block.
- CCTS and CBAM
- India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, and the EU’s carbon border charge on imports. Both need metered carbon numbers.
